Week 1

Finding our Feet—the earth is our Home!

Teaching Grades 3 & 4

With elizabeth Auer

This course will focus on the practical skills of living on earth, such as weaving

cloth and making moccasins. For children in Grade 3 we will build a simple

Navajo loom, learn how to create the warp, and begin weaving; we will also cut

out a Native American moccasin pattern and prepare leather for sewing.

For children in Grade 4 we will

create dioramas for animals

and their habitats, decorate

their homes with paintings and

illustrations, and liven them up
with gifts from nature. We will

also model the animals

in beeswax.

Optional grade-specific lunchtime

seminars will be offered on

Grades 3 and 4. We will share

ideas for additional projects, and

participants will receive prepared

handouts to support the Main

Lesson book work and classroom activities. We will also explore writing
and producing plays for these age groups. Chalkboard drawing ideas will be

presented and practiced.
